Job interviews are the most crucial points in our career. A lot depends on them and we all are at our bests to impress our employers. However, involuntarily we carry out a few typical mistakes which generally cost us the job. Here are a few mistakes which you will do well to avoid.
Look your best – try to avoid any sloppiness that may be seeping into your demeanor. Make sure that there are absolutely no stains on outfit, visible or not visible. Your shirt should crisp and properly ironed. Wrinkles are not appreciated by any employer. First impression counts a lot and a sloppy outfit never helps in making one.
Do not look desperate – however important the job may be for you don’t let your desperacy be seen! Be calm, cool and confident. Try and remain emotionless, for the interviewers are extremely good at spotting these.
Don’t be fidgety – don’t keep fidgeting because this shows your anxiety and nervousness which will not impress the interviewer. Employers always want people of confidence. If you appear nervous you are not a very good option for them.
Be on time – being late will just so that you do not have enough dedication to your work to get up early and reach the venue on time. This will never impress your employer. So make sure you know your way and have all the requisite directions. Get up early and keep some time in hand.
Get your research done – be sure to be prepared with all your answers. The general questions that the employers ask are generally known to all. Be sure that you know how to answer these. If the job is extremely important do more research about your employer so that you can frame your answer to his liking. If you are asked a question and you don’t give an intelligent answer to it, the employer will most likely move on to the next candidate. Always be sure of what you have written in your resume because your interviewer can ask questions from there too and if you are unable to answer it will just make you look bad.
Let the employer talk about your salary – if you jump too soon to the topic of your salary, it will make the interviewer feel that you are presuming you shall get the job. He will feel you are acting superior to him and this will never turn out good for you. So bid your time, and let him speak about it. Also speaking about your salary will indicate your avarice nature and no company hands out jobs to people who want it just for the money.
Never talk bad about your previous employer – bad-mouthing your previous boss before the interviewer will worsen your case. This is the biggest mistake one can make. Gossiping is never helpful in professional areas. Also, you never know who knows who so it’s best to keep your personal business personal.
Do not lie – there is no need to lie about your previous job. Interviewers have a knack for picking up on people telling lies so it’s best not to take a chance. Also, they have every means to find out whether you are lying or not.
Don’t have any bad odour – smell normal. Don’t put perfume or smoke just before the interview. You never know what your interviewer may think of perfumes and cigarettes and so on. This doesn’t mean that you should stink. Try and have a neutral body smell.
Be attentive – make sure you listen properly. Looking inattentive or indifferent will make the interviewer feel that you are not interested in this job. It will also show that you feel you are superior to them which is not what you want them thinking. So pay attention hang on to every word that they utter.
